High Adventure with the Boy Scouts

During the last week in July, I went with the Varsity and Venture Boy Scouts in our ward on their High Adventure Trip. We went to the Sierra Nevada Mountains for a week of backpacking and fishing in some of the most beautiful areas in the US. It was a total blast. It was tough hiking in (mostly because I am so out of shape! We hiked about 9 miles (with a 67 pound pack on my back – at least that’s what I thought it was, Brett do you remember? -His was almost as heavy) in to “Peeler Lake” in the Twin Lakes region. A combination of the altitude, my lack of physical preparation, and the Hamburger we ate the day before, made the hike pretty tough during the second half. The camp was at around 9,500 ft elevation, and we had climbed over 2,000 ft of elevation during the hike, the majority of it during the second half. By the end I was pretty much worn out A few of the other scouts reached the camp about 45 mins – hour before the few of us who were lagging behind, and whether they did it out of boredom or the “goodness” of their teenage hearts, a few of them came back and carried the packs of those of us who were struggling the rest of the way. The funny part was that I was climbing just as slow without a pack as I was with it because my legs were so tired.

Anyway, we finally made it to camp, and spent the week fishing, throwing knives, fighting off mosquitos, exploring and just having a great time with some great kids. If you’ve made the Sierra Hiking Trips before, post a comment with your memories
